Rippled Fingernails Could Be Telling You Something Important

Your fingernails can show signs of various health conditions, and ripples or ridges on them are worth paying attention to. Vertical ridges running from cuticle to tip are quite common and mostly harmless. They tend to appear as people get older and may also indicate minor vitamin or mineral deficiencies, especially of iron or vitamin B12.

In contrast, horizontal lines on the nails, known as Beau’s lines, occur after serious illnesses or stress that temporarily stops nail growth. These lines may be linked to heart problems, diabetes, or infections. When observed on all fingers and toes, Beau’s lines often suggest a systemic medical condition.

While simple nutritional improvements can improve many nail conditions, sudden or severe changes, especially if accompanied by other symptoms, should be evaluated by a doctor to detect possible hidden diseases.
