Frank Lane noticed a firm swelling on his neck in November 2023 but ignored it at first, thinking it was linked to his gym workouts. When it persisted, his doctor’s exam revealed a large mass protruding from his tonsil. A biopsy soon confirmed throat cancer caused by HPV, a sexually transmitted virus.
HPV is well known for causing cervical cancer, but it can also trigger throat cancers when transmitted through oral sex. Frank was surprised to learn this, as he had stopped smoking years ago and didn’t expect such a diagnosis.
